  • Donald Trump. Remember him?

The former President of the United States has had it in for his country’s women’s national football team for a while, and the feeling is absolutely mutual.

His usual target is Megan Rapinoe, who bagged two goals against the Matildas last night - including a goal directly from a corner kick to open the scoring, which is known as an ‘Olimpico’ for those of you playing at home. They’re very rare. I watch a lot of football and couldn’t tell you the last time I saw one.

True to form, Trump hasn’t let those facts get in the way of his argument, and released a statement overnight. It’s exactly what you’d expect, and includes a swipe at Rapinoe - aka “the woman with the purple hair” - who he reckons played “terribly”.

“If our soccer team, headed by a radical group of Leftist Maniacs, wasn’t woke, they would have won the Gold Medal instead of the Bronze,” he said.

“Woke means you lose, everything that is woke goes bad, and our soccer team certainly has. There were, however, a few Patriots standing. Unfortunately, they need more than that respecting our Country and National Anthem. They should replace the wokesters with Patriots and start winning again.

“The woman with the purple hair played terribly and spends too much time thinking about Radical Left politics and not doing her job!”

Hands up who reckons Trump watched the match?

Australia’s other great hope today - at least during the daylight hours - is a ballet-dancing boxer who dares to be different, paints his fingernails in the five colours of the Olympic rings and spoke of wearing a dress to the Tokyo opening ceremony to celebrate diversity.

Now Melbourne fighter Harry Garside has set tongues wagging for his in-ring skills, advancing to the last four with his win over Kazakhstan’s Zakir Safiullin on Tuesday night.

Whatever happens in today’s lightweight semi-final showdown (3.47pm) with Cuban Andy Cruz, a two-time amateur world champion, Garside is guaranteed at least a bronze medal.

Australia’s latest gold medallist was asked what he plans to do when he returns to San Diego on Sunrise this morning.

School was front of mind for the 18-year-old.

Australia’s Rhydian Cowley is going well. We’re through 30km of the 50km race walk and he has improved his position to eighth - but he’s part of a pretty big pack that sits nine seconds behind Poland’s Dawid Tomala. Two and a half hours down.

It’s a quiet morning as far as Aussies competing goes - certainly compared to last week in the pool, anyway. But it’s not long now until our two hopes in women’s golf tee off for their third rounds.

Minjee Lee is due to begin at 9.14am, and Hannah Green at 9.41am.

After two rounds at the Kasumigaseki Country Club, Green is ranked eighth with a score of -6. Lee is further back, tied for 24th with -3.

They’ve both got a bit of work to do to haul down the current leader, American Nelly Korda, who is streets ahead on -13.

But Tom Green did. And he beat him home in a race for a gold medal.

The Australian kayak star had German Max Hoff as the screensaver on his phone when he was a boy. On Thursday, he staved off Hoff’s challenge in the race to the line.

Belarusian sprinter Krystsina Tsimanouskaya says her husband is on his way to Poland as the couple look to make a new life for themselves there after the athlete’s dramatic defection during the Tokyo Olympics.

Tsimanouskaya, 24, arrived in Warsaw on Wednesday evening after she refused her coaches’ instruction to return to her homeland from Japan and was offered a humanitarian visa by Polish authorities.

She told Reuters on Thursday she had decided to defect while she was being taken to a Tokyo airport because her grandmother called her to tell her that it wasn’t safe to return to Belarus.

Later, Tsimanouskaya told a news conference in Warsaw: “Right now I feel much better here, I feel that I’m safe and a lot of people support me here and my husband. He is already on the road by car to Poland.“

“I’ll wait for him today in the evening so he will be here, maybe, with me... I am just waiting for him.“

Arseni Zhdanevich left home abruptly, travelling to Ukraine after his wife took refuge in the Polish embassy in Tokyo on Monday.

That’s one of the big questions in Tokyo today. Remember, just one more gold medal will push Australia past the tally of 17 golds from Athens 2004 and make this our best Games ever.

We’ve got a few chances to do it - although not as many left as we’d like, after yesterday’s team sport disappointments - with the first coming at 12.30pm in the women’s beach volleyball final.

Mariafe Artacho del Solar, who moved to Sydney from Peru with her mum when she was 11, and Taliqua Clancy, a Wulli Wulli and Goreng Goreng woman from regional Queensland, are up against Team USA’s April Ross and Alix Klineman.

Australia hasn’t won a beach volleyball medal since Sydney 2000, when Natalie Cook and Kerri Pottharst did it on the sands of Bondi Beach - a moment that inspired del Solar and Clancy, as did Cathy Freeman’s famous run at the same Games.

While we’re on the Matildas, coach Tony Gustavsson spoke last night about how they need to harness the pain they’re feeling (after losing the bronze medal match 4-3 to the US) ahead of the 2023 Women’s World Cup, which is to be held in Australia and New Zealand.

“I said in the circle [after the game] that I hope we never forget the feeling we felt after this loss because that feeling, we never want to feel again,” he said.

“We want to use it as fuel to make sure we work really hard to get better so come that World Cup in 2023 we want to have the feeling we had when we played [Great Britain], excitement and celebration to win.

“Personally I will never forget the feeling ... you don’t remember what someone said ... what you did, but you will definitely remember how you made them feel, and this feeling is probably never going to be forgotten.”
